Dragon Fruit

Arent these pretty looking fruit. Yeah, and they taste great. Little did I know that I would have an allergic reaction to them!

On the last two days I was in Bangkok I got quite ill and had to visit a hospital there. I was suffering from servere swelling to my limbs, neck, face, and abdomen. I went to the hospital in Bangkok and the doctor there cleared me to fly back to Japan but was unable to identify the cause. At the time, I thought it might be deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or economy snydrome, but the doctor in Thailand did a number of tests and said that was unlikely as the swelling wasnt limited to one area in particular. It was literally all over my body. He said it could be a viral infection or food allergies.

When I got back to Japan on Saturday morning, Mr. Nemo picked me up at the airport and we went straight to the ER of a local hospital where I spent all day undergoing tests. The test results were all clear for DVT or any blood clotting. It appears that it was an allergic food reaction, most likely to the dragon fruit which I ate
for every meal and had never eaten before. I dont have any other known food allergies. I was told that I was very lucky not to have respiratory swelling, as this could have been very dangerous and has been known to be fatal. They gave me an IV drip and sent me home to rest, saying that if there was any change in my condition I should come back.

I already mailed work and told them I am taking tomorrow off. I didnt sleep between Thursday night and Saturday night, so I am absoltely exhausted and the flight home was living hell. It sure was scary going to that Thai hospital and also I think I have had every test imaginable and been proded and poked for all of yesterday. The swelling is finally going down, and I am feeling a lot more myself today. But, still feel really tired and run down. Plan to continue the sleep and fluids the doc prescribed.

Oh wow- that is intense! Glad you made it back to Japan okay and that Mr Nemo could meet you at the airport and take you to the ER.

You poor thing, it must have been terrible not knowing what it was (especially since you thought it might be DVT then had to get on a plane).

Take it easy and get lots of rest. Hope you are feeling better soon.

oh my goodness! how horrible to get sick in a foreign country and have to go to hospital there too. You poor thing. (I once got relatively sick here in Japan and even though I live here, speak the language ra-ra, going to hospital and having all the tests was really scary.)I really hope you are feeling better.

And it is such a pretty looking fruit, who would have thought it could be so dangerous?
I wonder if your dreading the trip to Thailand was like a premonition that this would happen?!? Can you "see" things?

btw, Losing Kei is coming your way!
